What Is NFL Free Agency?

In the National Football League (NFL), a free agent is a player who is not under contract to any specific team and is eligible to sign with any organization or franchise interested in bringing them in. The term is also used in reference to a player who is currently under contract but who is allowed to hear offers from other teams. In some circumstances, the free agent’s options are limited by league rules.

Unrestricted Free Agent

Any NFL player with four or more accrued seasons and an expired contract; free to negotiate and sign with any team. Unrestricted free agents are players without a team. They have either been released by their former team or had their contract expire. These players are free to entertain offers from all teams.

Restricted Free Agent

An NFL player with three accrued seasons and an expired contract. RFAs are free to negotiate and sign with any team, but their original team can offer them a contract that comes with the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation.

A player who is currently signed to a team but is free to solicit contract offers from other teams. This player cannot sign with any competing franchise if their current team matches the terms of the offered contract.

Undrafted Free Agent

Players who are not selected in the NFL Draft are considered to be unrestricted free agents and are free to sign contracts with any team.

When Does NFL Free Agency Start?

The Legal Tampering Period

A two-day period right before free agency opens up where all teams have the right to negotiate “all aspects of an NFL player contract” with a players agent. Figures can be exchanged on a deal, but nothing can be agreed to or announced before the start of free agency.

There are restrictions to this process. A free agent is not permitted to visit with a team other than their current team. Furthermore, a player cannot be in contact with a team that is not their own. Only the agent can communicate on the player’s behalf during this period.

Free Agency & Trading Period Officially Begins

NFL free agency opens up in March and marks the beginning of the new NFL season. 2019 contracts have expired, allowing players to officially sign a new deal with one interested team. Unrestricted free agents and teams can verbally agree to deals prior to this date during the legal tampering period.

NFL Draft

The NFL draft happens every April and serves as the league’s most common form of signing new players. Each team is given a draft position based on the reverse order relative to its record in the previous season (i.e. the last place team drafts first). From their draft position, teams can either select a player or trade their position to another team for other draft positions, a player or players, or any combination thereof.
